The Transformative Power of Oracy

In 2015 I became an Associate and a founding member of Oracy Cambridge, the Hughes Hall Centre for Effective Spoken Communication.

We're a research-informed 'bridge centre' at the University of Cambridge, dedicated to improving the quality of spoken language and communication in schools and other organisations.

In classrooms, workplaces and the public square, the quality of talk shapes how we think, how we make decisions, and how we live.

When talk is effective, people reason, collaborate and create together.

When it isn't, misunderstandings grow, ideas stall, and some voices go unheard altogether.

Better talk leads to better thinking, better learning and better decisions. And when everyone has access to these skills, participation in democratic society becomes broader and fairer.

Oracy – the ability to use spoken language effectively – is foundational to all of it. Yet historically it hasn't been taught with the same clarity, rigour or consistency as reading, writing and maths.

Until now!

How we can help your school

We work with schools, trusts and local authorities in the UK and around the world to make effective spoken communication a normal, everyday part of learning.

This usually combines face-to-face and remote training, tailored to where your school is starting from – whether you're introducing oracy for the first time or deepening practice that's already under way.

Implementing Oracy

Our flagship annual programme is designed for senior leaders and oracy leads who want to embed oracy across a whole school or trust.

Co-facilitated with Topsy Page, and featuring workshops with colleagues from Oracy Cambridge, Implementing Oracy combines face-to-face sessions at the University of Cambridge with remote support, giving you the evidence base, the practical oracy strategies and the implementation know-how to bring about lasting changes to practice, and lasting impact on student learning outcomes.
