Teacher Research
Professional learning that places the practitioner in the driving seat

One-size-fits-all professional development – the online course, the INSET day, the all-staff twilight – often fails to impact student outcomes because it is done ‘to’ people, not ‘with’ them.
Teacher research flips that dynamic.
Instead of simply being told what to do, teachers investigate their own practice, engage with relevant research, try things out, gather evidence and evaluate what happens.
The result is professional learning that's genuinely owned by the people doing it – and changes to practice (and improved outcomes) that are more likely to stick.
Over the last 15 years, I have guided hundreds of teachers through the process of investigating their own practice in this way. It's some of the most rewarding work I do.

What's involved?
A typical programme runs two inquiry cycles over the school year – one short, one longer – facilitated through (usually) six sessions, some face-to-face and some remote, spread across the year.
Participants typically:
-
identify something they want to understand or improve
-
engage with relevant research and evidence
-
design an approach to investigate it
-
try something out in practice
-
gather and analyse evidence
-
reflect on what they've learned and decide what to do next
Because different schools have different needs, the programme is bespoke. You might be building research capacity from scratch, developing an existing culture of inquiry, or investigating a particular school improvement priority.
Who it's for:
The Teacher Research programme is suitable for any teacher, leader or member of support staff who is confident in their practice and wants to take it to the next level.
Most often, a school enrols a group of 8-12 participants to work through a shared process of collaborative practitioner inquiry across a school year.
You don't need to be an experienced researcher. The process is designed to be practical, manageable and directly connected to the work you're already doing.
